Pi Beta Phi was founded on April 28, 1867 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. The Ohio Alpha chapter was founded at Ohio University in 1889.

Pi Beta Phi's mascot is the angel and its colors are wine and silver blue.

Originally founded as a secret organization under the name of I. C. Sorosis, Pi Beta Phi was to be modeled after the Greek-letter fraternities of men.
